Shell Development Company

Shah Smith & Associates was responsible for design of the largest thermal storage system installed in the Houston area. This 4.5-million-gallon chilled water storage system reduced On Peak electrical demand by 6172 kW, saving approximately $950,000 per year in electrical demand charges and qualifying for a $1.9 million rebate from CenterPoint Energy (HL&P).
Shah Smith & Associates also designed the installation of a 5 KV variable speed drive for an existing 1000 horsepower chilled water pump, reducing average pump energy by over 50%. The pump is controlled to maintain adequate differential pressures at various remote points on the campus.
Shah Smith & Associates received the Team Excellence Award from Shell Oil Company in recognition of outstanding services on the Cool Storage Project.
