Instructional Laboratory and Innovative Learning Building

The new Instructional Laboratory and Innovative Learning Building (ILSQ) provides instructional labs, design studios, and a maker space to support interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) learning for undergraduate students.
The five story building houses classes for the chemistry department and architecture department. The new facility provides 28 science lab spaces to support the entire lower-division chemistry program, eight interdisciplinary studios for art instruction, an interdisciplinary maker space, and small and large study spaces for students to gather, study, and collaborate. The first three stories of the building provide general chemisty classrooms. The upper two stories of the chemistry wing house organic chemistry classes.
The ILSQ supports approximately 8,500 students weekly during normal university core hours. Each of the laboratories is designed to support active learning and allow students to work on higher level experiments. In total the chemistry wing of the building is equipped with 164 fume hoods. SSA provided studies to analys on using lower fume hood face velocities as well as the laboratory exhaust energy recovery systems.
The maker space wing of the building is equipped with a wood shop and a house dust collection system. The building is also equipped with multiple 3D printers. A dedicated painting room is also part of the facility.
The building provides soften and RO water to all the laboratories. A dedicated laboratory lab waste system is provided and tied to the sanitary waste system in the crawlspace.The building is located on the west side of the campus and utilizes campus thermal and electrical distribution networks.
