Shah Smith & Associates, Inc. (SSA) provided the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for the Prairie View A&M University Student Recreation Center.  The project included demolition of the existing natatorium structure and supporting spaces, allowing the new Student Recreation Center to be connected to the existing Nicks Field House as well as incorporate the existing swimming pool into the new facility.

The Student Recreation Center is a two-story facility with generous glazing to animate the west end of the campus core. The Student Recreation Center provides wellness and fitness opportunities, including:

  • Renovation of existing natatorium systems
  • Three basketball court gym and elevated running track
  • Weight training and fitness
  • Multipurpose studios for spin classes, yoga, arobics and other group activities
  • Student game lounge
  • Childcare facility
  • Climbing wall
  • Outdoor pursuits
  • New locker rooms and showers
  • Equipment storage and checkout desk
  • Laundry room
  • Office of Recreation Sports

Infrastructure work included intensive thermal utility extensions and relocations, site lighting, walkways and landscaping.

As part of the project, the existing natatorium structure and surrounding support spaces were demolished, including all the pool equipment.  While the exising natatorium was not heated or air conditioned, the MEP design for the new Student Recreation Center included the addition of HVAC to the natatorium and new pool heaters, pumps and filtration equipment.

The project included a new diesel emergency generator to serve both the new Student Recreation Center and the Nicks Fieldhouse, and LED lighting was used in the gymnasium.

The fire pump system was installed in the Student Recreation Center and sized to serve both the new facilty as well as for future extension int the Nicks Fieldhouse.
