Mays Clinic Sterile Processing Department Renovation

SSA provided MEP engineering services for the MDACC Mays Clinic Sterile Processing Department Renovation.

This project included a buildout of a new 7,000 SF Central Sterile Processing Department to provide a local sterilization location for the Mays Clinic Facility. This included the addition of new sterilizers, a new automated cart washer and new washer/disinfectors.  A new mechanical system was provided and designed to meet the latest energy codes and the requirements of AAMI ST 79. 

The existing HVAC was identified to not have the capabilities to meet the requirements of ST 79 and therefore a new set of air handlers were provided. One of the air handlers was provided with a DX coil and water cooled condensing unit to meet the low dew point temperature requirements from AAMI ST 79.  The new air handlers were provided with fan arrays to provide the owner with a reliable AHU system.  A new exhaust system was provided for the wet and dirty exhaust that is created in the SPD.  The sterilizers for this project required high and medium-pressure steam, which required a new high-pressure steam PRV station to be added and new high and medium-pressure steam piping to be routed to the new steam sterilizer locations.  The new sterilizers also required a new RO system to create a clean steam system.  The location of the sterile processing department was located on a floor with a low floor to floor height so SSA coordinated with the owner and a contractor to be provided with a laser scan of the existing MEP equipment above the ceiling. SSA was able to import this point cloud into the Revit model to aid in the coordination effort to route the new MEP utilities. In addition, due the floor to floor heights and many utilities were routed under the SPD in the parking garage area and careful coordination was conducted to verify that the new utilities would not impact the circulation and reduce parking counts. All new DDC controls were provided with the new HVAC for this project.
