Shah Smith & Associates, Inc. provided MEP engineering services for this MD Anderson Cancer Center Houston Area Location.

This 200,000 square feet regional care center is an outpatient cancer care which offers diagnostic, MRI, CT imaging, specialty pharmacy(USP 797 and 800 compliant), linear therapy, infusion, radiation oncology (linear accelerator and HDR, Inc.), endoscopy, interventional radiology, lab and exam, women’s’ health mammography, lab and diagnostic) general exam and in house full diagnostic lab services.

This campus is integrated with the greater University of Texas Medical Branch campus infrastructure.

The mechanical systems consist of two 100% redundant chilled water heat exchangers with primary and secondary pumps. These chilled water heat exchangers decouple the building chilled water system from the surrounding UTMB campus utility loop. A process cooling loop with two 100% redundant heat exchangers and pumps provides process chilled water to cool imaging equipment throughout the building. The heating hot water system consists of two 100% redundant chilled water heat exchangers with primary and secondary pumps. These heating hot water heat exchangers also decouple the building heating water loop from the campus utility loop. Pre-treatment outside air handlers with energy recovery wheels supply air to building VAV air handling systems with VAV terminal boxes containing hot water coils. Air handling units are manifolded to provide redundancy within the system. The pharmacy area is served by a dedicated 100% redundant air handling unit system and exhaust fans.

Domestic water is supplied to the building with pumps for distribution. A water softener is provided for soft water supply to the domestic shell and tube heat exchangers and hydronic boiler make-up supply. Each heat exchanger is sized for 50% of the domestic hot water demand. Condensate is collected from the air handling units and routed to a site retention pond for irrigation use.

The building is served electrical power from a pad-mounted transformer from TNMP serving switchgear in the building.  A 1000kW diesel generator serve essential electrical system needs through automatic transfer switches (ATSs).  ATSs separate branches between life safety, critical, and equipment branches with multiple critical branch and equipment branch ATSs to separate loads within the building.  Networked lighting controls are provided in the building, and all lighting is LED. Power management software provides electrical system status back to the main campus facility operations center in the Texas Medical Center for remote monitoring capability.
