Alkek Hospital Basement Level Central Sterile Processing Department Renovation
mD anderson cancer center
SSA provided MEP engineering services for the MDACC Alkek Hospital Basement Level Central Sterile Processing Department Renovation.
This project included a renovation of the existing 16,000 SF Central Sterile Processing Department to help improve workflow issues and maintain reliability. This included the replacement of existing sterilizers and adding additional sterilizers, adding automated cart washers and adding new washer/disinfectors. This project involved the decommissioning of an existing ETO sterilizer and the associated MEP. The mechanical system was upgraded and designed to meet the latest energy codes and the requirements of AAMI ST 79.
The project was split into 23 phases to allow the existing SPD to remain operational during the construction phase of this project. The existing space was served by constant volume double duct terminal boxes and the renovation went back with single duct VAV terminal boxes served off the new air handling units.
Two new air handlers were provided for the SPD and one was provided with a DX coil and water cooled condensing unit to meet the low dew point temperature requirements from AAMI ST 79. The new air handlers were provided with fan arrays to provide the owner with a reliable AHU system. The existing facility exhaust systems were audited during the project to review the amount of existing capacity on the existing fans and based off this information SSA was able to utilize existing fan systems to minimize construction costs and disruption to the existing facility. All new DDC controls were provided with the new HVAC for this project.
