Farm Repair and Modernization

Shah Smith & Associates provided MEP engineering for Tarleton State University Farm Repair & Modernization in Stephenville, Texas. The 71,831 square feet single floor building has a few components.
Component one is a laboratory building comprised of six teaching/learning labs, two lab prep spaces, and a retail store for farm product display and sales programmed at 20,000 GSF. Component two is a covered outdoor animal area containing a large open-sided barn with a teaching arena and penning to work and sort animals programmed at 44,000 GSF. Component one and two are programmed to be under one roof. Component three is best described as a separate greenhouse/planting building programmed at 7,920 GSF that comprises space for prep, demonstration, testing, and forage gardening.
The HVAC system provides comfort cooling to the building via DX Fan Coil Units with SCR controlled electric heat. Outside air for building ventilation, pressurization and make-up air is provided by two 100% outside air DX split systems. Laboratories spaces are served with tracking type VAV air terminal units. Exhaust from all devices such as fume hoods, snorkels and laboratory general exhaust is provided by redundant high plume laboratory exhaust fans located on the equipment platform.
The electrical system is derived from an existing overhead electrical line brought below grade to the building pad-mount transformer. The building electrical distribution system provides interior and exterior lighting, provides power for the laboratories, and re-fed existing barns. A lightning protection and grounding system are provided. A stand-by generator provides power to select laboratory equipment in the event of a normal power loss. The building is equipped with a fire alarm system.
